Common QLD Driving Test Mistakes to Avoid
A practical guide to the common errors learners should watch for when preparing for a Queensland practical driving test.
QLD PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST
Drive safe. Stay observant. Make good decisions.
Use these areas as a final preparation checklist. They bring together the habits that can make the difference between simply operating the car and demonstrating safe, independent driving.
1Observation & shoulder checksScan early and check blind spots before lane changes, moving off, pulling in and other significant lateral movements.
2Speed managementKnow the limit, notice speed-zone changes and choose a safe speed for the conditions. Avoid both speeding and unnecessarily slow progress.
3IndicatorsSignal clearly and early enough, cancel when appropriate, and combine signalling with proper observation.
4Stop signs & stop linesMake a complete stop in the correct position. If visibility is restricted, move forward cautiously only after stopping correctly.
5Signs, lights & road markingsRead and obey regulatory signs, traffic signals, lane arrows, dividing lines and other road markings.
6Gap selectionChoose gaps with a genuine safety margin at intersections, roundabouts, turns, merges and lane changes.
7Road position & lane choiceStay correctly positioned, choose the correct lane early and set up properly for turns, intersections and changing traffic conditions.
8Mirror useUse mirrors naturally and regularly as part of your hazard-perception routine, especially before changing speed or direction.
9Reversing & manoeuvresMaintain all-round observation. Do not rely only on mirrors or the reversing camera, and keep monitoring surrounding hazards.
10Nerves & decision-makingAvoid rushed decisions, unnecessary hesitation, over-checking or fixation on the speedometer. Drive the safe way you have practised.
TEST-DAY MINDSET: Safe. Legal. Observed. Independent.
